Pilates was developed in the 20th Century by Joseph Pilates. As an unhealthy child, he studied many kinds of self-improving systems. During World War I he developed the floor exercises that we know now as mat work, to improve the physical and mental health of his fellow internees. Because of the bedridden German soldiers, he started using springs on their hospital beds to work with resistance, and it led to the creation of the Pilates Reformer.
